Madinah Ziyarat Guide: Sites to Visit & How to Plan Your Day

After praying in Masjid an-Nabawi, most pilgrims want to see the places where the early story of Islam took place. Madinah's Ziyarat sites are spread across the city, and a private car lets you visit them at your own pace, without waiting for a group bus or rushing from stop to stop.

Here are the main sites, the best time to go, and how to plan the day.

The main Ziyarat sites in Madinah

  • Masjid Quba. The first mosque in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever purifies himself at home, then comes to Masjid Quba and prays in it, will have a reward like that of an Umrah (Sunan Ibn Majah 1412).
  • Masjid al-Qiblatain. The Mosque of the Two Qiblas, where the direction of prayer changed from Jerusalem to the Ka'bah.
  • Mount Uhud and the Martyrs of Uhud. The site of the Battle of Uhud, where Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib and other companions are buried.
  • The Seven Mosques. A group of small mosques near the site of the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq).
  • Jannat al-Baqi. The cemetery next to Masjid an-Nabawi, where many companions and members of the Prophet's family are buried. It is close enough to visit on foot.

The best time to go

  • Early morning, after Fajr and breakfast, is cooler and quieter, especially in the summer months.
  • After Asr is another good window if you want to be back for Maghrib at Masjid an-Nabawi.
  • Saturdays at Quba: the Prophet ﷺ used to visit Quba every Saturday, walking or riding (Sahih al-Bukhari 1193), so many pilgrims plan their Quba visit for a Saturday.

Tips for families

  1. Carry water, and an umbrella or cap in the warmer months.
  2. Dress modestly and bring comfortable shoes for the walk at Uhud.
  3. Plan around prayer times, so you are back at Masjid an-Nabawi for the prayers you don't want to miss.
  4. Choose space for elderly parents. A Staria or GMC gives a whole family more room than a full Camry. Compare vehicles on our fleet page.
