Makkah to Madinah Taxi: Fare, Time & Tips (2026 Guide)
How long the Makkah to Madinah drive takes, what a taxi costs by vehicle, the Miqat and Badr stops, and how to plan the trip with your family.

In this article (7 sections)
The drive between Makkah and Madinah is the longest single journey of most Umrah trips. It is about 450 km and takes 4.5 to 5 hours by private taxi, hotel to hotel. Planning it well makes the difference between a tiring day and a comfortable one, especially with children or elderly parents.
Here is what to expect on the road, what the taxi costs, and the stops worth planning for.
Distance and travel time
The road route runs for roughly 450 km along the modern highway between the two cities. In normal conditions a private taxi takes 4.5 to 5 hours, including a short break on the way. During Ramadan and the Hajj season, the roads near both cities are busier, so allow extra time.
| Journey | Distance | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Makkah → Madinah | About 450 km | 4.5–5 hours |
| Madinah → Makkah | About 450 km | 4.5–5 hours, plus the Miqat stop |
| Either direction via Badr | Longer route | Add time for the visit |
Taxi fares by vehicle
Fares are per vehicle, not per person, and start from:

Stops worth planning for
- The Miqat at Dhul Hulaifah (Abyar Ali). If you are travelling from Madinah to Makkah to perform Umrah, this is your Miqat, just outside Madinah. Tell us when you book and your driver will stop so you can enter Ihram.
- Badr. Some travellers like to visit Badr, the site of the first major battle in Islamic history, on the way. We offer a route via Badar in both directions, from 430 SAR for a Camry.
- Prayer and rest. On a drive of this length, your driver can stop for prayer and a short rest along the highway.
Choosing a vehicle for a long drive
Over four or five hours, space matters more than on a short airport transfer.
- Camry: fine for two to four passengers with standard luggage.
- Staria or GMC: more legroom and luggage space for families, and a calmer ride for elderly parents.
- Hiace or Coaster: keeps a large family or a group together in one vehicle, usually cheaper than booking several cars.
Compare them on our fleet page, or tell us your group size and we will suggest one.
Taxi or Haramain train?
The Haramain High Speed Railway is faster on the open route, but the stations are not next to the Haram in either city, so you still need a ride on both ends. For families with luggage, a door-to-door taxi is often simpler. We compare both in our guide to the Haramain train vs taxi.
How booking works
- Send us your date, pickup hotel, drop-off hotel, number of passengers and bags on WhatsApp.
- We confirm your fare and send a booking receipt with your driver's details. Your driver receives the same receipt.
- Your driver picks you up at your hotel and helps with your luggage.
